成功主持過國家攀登計劃基金、霍英東青年教師基金、跨世紀人才基金、國家自然科學(xué)基金委面上基金及數(shù)學(xué)天元基金、全國博士后甲級基金、教委歸國留學(xué)人員基金、教育部優(yōu)秀年輕教師基金課題,973燃燒與污染治理項目子題、973黃河項目子題、973城市生態(tài)項目專題、北京市自然科學(xué)基金人工濕地污水處理工程重點項目以及一系列橫向項目。在國際國內(nèi)核心刊物上發(fā)表論文一百多篇。

在系統(tǒng)生態(tài)學(xué)和生態(tài)經(jīng)濟學(xué)方面提出了宇宙(Cosmic exergy)的概念,確證了生態(tài)系統(tǒng)最根本的自然資源是宇宙,而非太陽能,進而提出基于 值(Embodied Exergy)概念的生態(tài)價值評價體系,改進了系統(tǒng)生態(tài)學(xué)創(chuàng)始人Odum所提出的能值方法。

在環(huán)境哲學(xué)方面,于1994年在《哲學(xué)研究》上發(fā)表“關(guān)于環(huán)境問題的哲學(xué)思考”一文,對環(huán)境哲學(xué)的形上學(xué)基礎(chǔ)、方法論和功用提出了系統(tǒng)性的看法,以中國傳統(tǒng)的“天人合一”為核心構(gòu)建和諧哲學(xué),歸納出三種環(huán)境境界,在理論界引發(fā)多年論爭,促成了環(huán)境哲學(xué)作為國家二級學(xué)科的地位。所提出的環(huán)境哲學(xué)思想和環(huán)境社會經(jīng)濟系統(tǒng)模型理論已作為十多個核心條目載入《中國大百科全書》環(huán)境科學(xué)卷(修訂版)。
